Character: Artemis Crock
Fandom: Young Justice

History: Young Justice wiki. Right now, I'm starting her off at the team's first year. I'll deal with the timeskip and the Tigress alias as they come.
Personality:
Artemis is in the very unique situation of being a superhero from a family of supervillains. And she's trying desperately to hide that fact. Secrets and fear deal with a major part of her personality—she can come off as haughty at times and very defensive because she's terrified of rejection on the grounds that her father is a horrible person, her sister is an assassin, and her mom is an ex-con. She's very much a survivor, having put up with her father's emotional (and implicitly physical) abuse for years since her mom was arrested, and this adds to her "tough" exterior. She lies, a lot, though she's not always very good at lying. Pretty terrible, in fact. All of this is so she can protect herself. If she learned one thing from her father, it's that she has to look out for herself.

But that doesn't mean it's "every girl for herself." She is incredibly loyal and has a strong desire to do good. She rejected the life that her parents led, and made her own costume patterned off her secret idol, superhero Green Arrow, to fight crime. She even protected the team long before she knew who they were. Her friends are her family, as far as she's concerned. She looks out for them, she's passionate in her likes and dislikes, and she eventually comes to trust everyone and not fear rejection quite as much. But she can be very sympathetic, when she lets herself let her guard down. She gets along well with the girls on the team, possibly because Miss Martian likened her to a sister and neither one of them could say they were close to their blood-sisters. Eventually, she would become pretty much the glue holding her friends together, helping Miss Martian and Aqualad recover from the aftermath of Miss Martian's mental attack on him in season two, and she'd be trusted enough in skill and loyalty that Aqualad wouldn't even have to risk blowing his cover by dodging an attack because he knew she'd block it. That's the kind of friend she is.

A major flaw, though? Her need to prove herself. She's very insecure, even though she may come off as cocky and headstrong. This insecurity stems not just from her heritage, but from the fact that she's taking Speedy/Red Arrow's place on the team. While most of the team is warm and welcoming to her, she ran into huge resistance from Kid Flash, who was angry that his friend was apparently being replaced, and from Red Arrow himself, who didn't take kindly to Green Arrow taking up a new sidekick so soon after he quit, and he suspected her of being a traitor the entire time. So she butted heads with them a lot, as she just doesn't take kindly to this sort of thing. She's very reactionary when it comes to her anger. Also add to it that she had a major crush on Kid Flash, and it was safer for her to pick on him than risk revealing all and risking rejection, as she thought he didn't like her.

Other: She's really terrible at keeping secrets. She's trying, but honestly? The whole reason why nobody figured out who she was before was because only Aqualad and Kid Flash were the sane ones (Robin too, but he already knew).

First Person:

1. One of your greatest secrets has just been exposed to the people close to you. What do you do?

What secret? I don't have any secrets! I mean, unless you're talking about my secret identity, then, yeah, that would be a problem. At school, of course, not with the team. I mean, what's the big deal if they know who I am? It's only Robin who's that obsessed with nobody finding out who he is. In fact, I'll tell you right now: My real name is Artemis. No secrets needed.

...No secrets.

2. How do you normally dress? Why do you dress that way?

Either way, it's a uniform. I transferred to a private school, Gotham Academy, and the uniform's pretty standard stuff: white button-up shirt, red tie, blue skirt, and either a sweater vest or a blazer with the school insignia. I went with the blazer instead of the vest because....yeah. Dorky enough. I'd much rather have a t-shirt and jeans or my other uniform—green top with an arrow and showing off my midriff, green tights, green mask. It's all based off Green Arrow, who's my uncle, you know? And I really look up to him, and I'm grateful he took me as his sidekick. I never expected he would.

...Uncle or not, you know? I mean, Kid Flash's uncle is the Flash, but it's obvious why Flash took him as a sidekick—someone has to keep Wally under control, right?

Yeah. Um, next question?

3. You're at the scene of a robbery, but you manage to get the upper hand; you're holding the gun. The robber is at your mercy. What do you do?

Easy. I quickly set off a foam arrow to hold him tight so he can't escape, then I bag the gun for evidence. Alternatively, knock him out. First lesson from Batman: Don't toss the gun—it's evidence and needs to be processed by the police, and you can't risk the perp getting it again. Then I get out of there and let the police sort out the rest.

4. You're doing some spring cleaning. What is easy for you to throw out? What is difficult for you to part with? Why?

There's a lot of gifts from Dad that I wouldn't mind getting rid of. I think Mom pawned off her wedding ring. Good for her.

I can't get rid of Jade's Alice in Wonderland poster. No matter what. We might have fought all the time, but we're still sisters. She's never coming back home, and if I never see her again, I need something to remember her by. I'm tired of being the only one holding the family together.

5. Do you have any strong memories that have stuck with you from your childhood? Why are they so powerful and lasting?

The day Jade ran away. It was only a few months after Mom was arrested. I mean, yeah, now I can see why she left, what with Dad and all. But...she left me behind. Said I'd slow her down. I haven't seen her since, and I don't know what happened to her, if she...

Can we get off the subject of my family? There's stuff I really don't want to talk about.

6. You're faced with a crisis of faith. What pulls you back to solidify your beliefs and find strength in them again?

My team. It might have taken time for Kaldur to step up as a leader, but he's kept us all on course. Superboy's learning pretty well, and there's definitely a brain under all that brawn. M'gann is just like a sister to me—closer than Jade was, and apparently I'm closer to her than her own sisters too, so that's good for both of us. And even though Robin and Wally are both a pain in the butt, they know how to pull it together and be inspiring—Robin more than Wally, though.

As for the League, definitely Green Arrow, and Black Canary, who kind of acts as therapist for us. And weird as it is, I think I kind of like Red Tornado as our den mother. I mean, he's not that great at acting human, but he's learning. I'm sure the others in the League are worried about how hands-off he might be, but it's kind of nice having someone who won't mind if we throw a party.

7. How do you feel about your hometown? What do you think the people there would say about you?

Gotham? On a nice day, it's a cesspool teeming with superstitious and cowardly criminals. There are nicer areas, yeah, but that's mostly around the Academy and Wayne Manor and all that. Way beyond Sprang Boulevard.

Everyone at school seems okay with me. Bette, for example. She's nice. As for the superhero side? Batman and Robin have things under control here. Green Arrow's been helping train me in Star City, which is much nicer and they're starting to recognize me. Seems like they like me okay, though I keep hearing a lot of "Where's Speedy?" Guess that's something I'll have to get used to hearing.

8. You find a wallet on the side of the road, but there's no one around. What do you do with it?

I either take it to the police or see if I can find the owner on my own. The first option really depends on if I feel like I can trust the police—it's an old habit, plus, not every cop in Gotham is that great. Better chance in Star. Otherwise, I just ask Robin to hack a database to find who it belongs to. Which is probably a better idea because if a wallet's been left behind like this, something's probably wrong—mugging or something, and we should look into it.

9. Do you have any dreams or ambitions? How do you intend to achieve them?

Well, I don't know. I want to keep doing what I'm doing with the team, and I'd like them to accept me more someday. I mean, most everyone seems okay, but Wally's still a butt to me. I want to find my sister, but I have no idea where to even start there, or if I want to know if anything happened to her.

Beyond that? I guess I want to go to college, make Mom proud. Start getting beyond this poor area in Gotham. It'd be nice if I could help take care of her, do something good. She's had it rough, and she's trying to make something better out of her life, and to make my life better. I'd like to return the favor.

10. You have tickets to your favorite band's concert tonight, but your best friend asks you for an urgent favor that would make you miss it. Which one do you choose and why?

Secret identities or not, we try not to ask each other for favors like this unless it's really important, so I'd do what they asked me. Kaldur's levelheaded enough that he tries to figure out who's best for what, so if he needs me, then it's something only I can do. Robin's kind of the same way, but more annoying about it. M'gann...she might ask me for something not all that important, but if that happens, I think she'd understand and ask someone else. Superboy never asks for help, so that would have to be something huge, and Wally hates me, so for him to ask me for help, it must be the end of the world, so I'd have to help.

Third Person:

School sucked.

Seriously.

There were enough scholarship kids that nobody batted an eye that she came from a rough part of town, and nobody ever associated her last name with that of notorious criminal Lawrence Crock (though there was a terrifying moment today with Commissioner Gordon's daughter that only got broken up by one of the freshmen hanging upside down from a flagpole—Artemis made a mental note to find that Dick Grayson and sneak him a cookie or something as thanks). But it still always felt like she was wearing a mask. Even more than when she was "Green Arrow's niece."

The Zeta Tube opened and sent her straight to the Cave. Immediately, she smelled burnt cookies from one of M'gann's latest kitchen experiments and knew that Wally would have the batch all to himself. Conner was feeding Wolf, and Kaldur was reading some book in Greek. He looked up when she walked in, looking concerned.

"Artemis, are you all right? You seem troubled."

"Don't worry about it," she sighed. "Just school stuff. The usual."

"I hear ya," Conner muttered, and she stifled a grin.

"Think I'll get in some practice to blow off some steam," she decided.

"Would you like one of us to join you?" Kaldur checked.

"Maybe later." Right now, she needed a little time to herself.

It was strange how much changing into her costume, putting a mask over her face, and working with a bunch of teenagers with codenames and secrets all of their own made Artemis feel more honest with herself. Maybe there were parts of herself she wasn't ready to share with them (and maybe she'd never be), but she could at least be the person she wanted to be.
